This year Dave arranged our Wedding Anniversary mini-vacation at Snowshoe mountain hoping we could spend most of the time skiing. We love skiing at Snowshoe. This mountain has numerous long ski slopes which intersect with one another and you can reach any distant part of the mountain including expert slopes in the Western Territories. This the best closest ski resort in our area. Besides, it has a cute village on the top of the mountain. The village looked nice and festive in preparation for the Holiday season. Here the village’s Christmas Tree in the picture below taken on our last day there.
It took us exactly 4.5 hours to reach the Snowshoe resort. It was warm and very foggy outside, especially once we entered West Virginia, but we did enjoy the ride. There was no traffic on the road, most likely because it was a work day.
We were able to see some nice surrounding views while driving. Can you see how foggy it is in the background?
It was foggy at Snowshoe as well. We took a walk around our resort and through the village. There was no snow on the ground, but the snow guns near the slopes were working for a while making snow. This picture was taken near the outdoor heated pool at the resort.
We took some pictures of Snowshoe village while walking that evening.
Although weather didn’t cooperate with us very well and we ended up having only one full day of skiing, we had a great time at the beautiful Allegheny Springs resort conveniently located in the village adjacent to one of the ski lifts. This resort offers beautiful facilities for skiing and relaxation: from ski lockers to spa, infinite heated pools and Jacuzzis, yoga classes and more. We enjoyed our time in the pool and the outside Jacuzzi and we took one yoga class there. One of the fireplaces and Christmas tree in the resort’s lobby.
This is the day when a couple of the ski slopes were announced open for skiing. The ski lift as seen from our balcony. We were ready right at the opening at 9 A.M. 🙂
Finally, we were on the slopes. I forgot how much fun it was! Thanks to my husband, who is also my patient ski instructor, I can experience the world of skiing. I wish I were as good at snowboarding. Oh, well. 🙂
As I mentioned earlier, only 2 ski lifts were open. We were able to make some nice runs before noon. It became pretty crowded after that. After waiting a half an hour for the Powder Monkey lift, we moved to the Ballhooter lift, which was not as crowded at the time. Here I am standing in line at the Powder Monkey lift.
On the lift.
At the Ballhooter lift.
We stopped at the Boathouse to have some coffee, but it was very crowded inside, so we decided to get back to our hotel room and have a nice lunch there.
We brought a lot of good food with us and did most of the cooking in the condo. I love Dave’s delicious cooking!
We visited many restaurants in the village considering we made numerous trips to Snowshoe, but we hadn’t visited the Junction restaurant yet, so this time we did. It is a casual restaurant with a cute rugged atmosphere. Food and service were good there. There is a watertower in the middle of the room – interesting decoration.
Time to leave. Beautiful sunny morning! I noticed that the weather is always great on the day we need to leave Snowshoe. Here is a front view of the Allegheny Springs resort.
We took a different route on the way home this time and discovered many interesting places in West Virginia, which we hadn’t seen before. Here is a pastoral view of some quiet country side near Seneca Caverns.
We saw some rocky mountains.
Beautiful evergreen trees.
This is a typical West Virginia road.
I could not take a picture of these cute “Teddy” cows. Dave named them Teddy cows because of their Teddybear-like ears.
More views from the road.
We stopped at the Smoke Hole Caverns gift shop on the way. It is very large and nice gift shop. We didn’t visit the caverns this time, because we didn’t want to wait for the cavern tour, but we will probably visit them this summer. We actually obtained some brochures about this area, which stated that there are other things to do in the area such as: rock climbing, horse riding, exploring different caverns in the area. We decided to set up a mini vacation this summer to experience these things.
Petersburgh – typical West Virginia town.
We drove through some other town on our way back home from Snowshoe. We enjoyed our ride home and the new view of a different part of West Virginia.
