This time of year, The Nutcracker is a holiday tradition for many families across the globe. Dave and I decided to share the festive holiday spirit by experiencing The Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker performance in the Music Center at the Strathmore of Bethesda.
The Moscow Ballet delivers a sweet and charming production of this holiday classic that is adapted from E.T.A. Hoffman’s story, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The company works with over 3,600 children around the nation to fill many of the roles for this production through a program called “Dance with us.” The Great Russian Nutcracker’s two act ballet includes a score composed by Tchaikovsky. This magical ballet reigns as a traditional seasonal classic that has been translated countless times into various genres.
Right after work we stopped at La Madeleine Country French café in Rockville, MD for dinner before the ballet. The Rockville streets looked festive and ready for the Holiday season.
The weather this December was staying so warm and enjoyable. Here are the blooming rose bushes near the La Madeleine café.
We like the food in this café, especially the desserts.
Around 8 P.M. we have arrived at the beautiful Strathmore venue.
And took some pictures of ourselves before the ballet.
We were sitting at the balcony, because that is what was available by the time of buying the ballet tickets.
The ballet was incredible and we enjoyed it very much. The production is known for its dedication to world peace: naming Act II the “Land of Peace and Harmony;” featuring a rose shooting cannon and a stunning “Dove of Peace” with a 20’ wingspan. All ages feel the spirit of the season at the Great Russian Nutcracker through the romantic costumes and shimmering backdrops splashed with highlights of Russian history. Additional fanciful effects include life-sized Matrushka Dolls; 3-headed Rat King and authentic Troika Sleigh escorted by Father Christmas and Snow Maiden through the magic Snow Forest. Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday, Everyone!
