What a surprisingly great show we attended today! We bought tickets to the show, “Cabaret” , just to explore a local theater, besides the price was very reasonable. I am really glad we did it. First, the theater is located in the cozy Shirlington Village, full of cute boutiques and gourmet restaurants. Second, the theatre has unique settings. Third, the show is a sultry and bold new performance of the classic Cabaret. I would definitely recommend visiting this theater to anyone in the area. Dave and I would consider visiting it again. 🙂
Cabaret was performed at the Signature Theatre, a Tony-Award-winning regional theater company based at The Village at Shirlington in Arlington, Virginia.
We were enjoying our coffee in the theater’s café while waiting for the show to start and looking down on the street through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Cabaret is a musical based on a book written by Christopher Isherwood. The 1966 Broadway production became a hit, inspiring numerous subsequent productions in London and New York, as well as the 1972 film by the same name (from Wikipedia).
One of the most creative aspects of the show is the set design. Upon entering the house seating, one is immersed into the Kit Kat Club’s rows and tables surrounding the main stage. A bar sits in the theater that both the characters and audience may indulge in. Through innovative design, the set maximizes the storytelling, giving new life to the visuals and audience experience.
The theater was a perfect size and every seat was a great! There were no bad seats. The actors interacted with the audience constantly by walking and dancing amongst the tables. Even the bartenders who served the audience were costumed performers. 🙂
