Toronto from CN Tower

The weather forecast was calling for rain all day, so we decided to spend the day in Toronto. Toronto is a large, ethnically diverse city situated along Lake Ontario’s northwestern shore and the provincial capital of Ontario, Canada. It is a dynamic metropolis with a core of soaring skyscrapers headed by the iconic CN Tower. Toronto is a leading international center of business, finance, arts, and culture.

Niagara Falls – Canadian Side Part 1

Dave and I finally got to see Niagara Falls, a well-known natural landmark, attracting hundreds and hundreds of tourists. Here is very short note about the Falls based on my quick research. Niagara Falls consists of three waterfalls: Horseshoe Falls (on the Canadian side), American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls (both on the American side).

The falls are located on the Niagara River between the twin cities of Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Niagara Falls, New York. We decided to stay on the Canadian side and hit the American side on the way home.

George Washington’s Distillery & Gristmill

The general admission tickets to Mt. Vernon include a visit to a fully functioning reconstruction of George Washington’s Distillery and Gristmill, located about 3 miles from the Mt. Vernon estate. Dave and I had a short ride from the George Washington estate, parked our car, and walked towards the Distillery and Gristmill entrance where we were greeted by this nice gentleman.

After the Through My Eyes tour, Dave and I walked to the part of the estate with the outbuildings. Most of them are not located far from the mansion.

Mt. Vernon – Trough My Eyes Tour

Through My Eyes tour is a 45-minute immersive experience to step back and see Mount Vernon through the eyes of the people who knew George Washington best. An actor portraying a character such as Washington’s granddaughter, personal secretary, or farm manager guides you across the estate as they go about their daily activities, making several stops along the way. Besides the general admission tickets, we had to purchase an additional ticket for this tour. The tour started at the main entrance to the Mansion Circle.

Mt. Vernon – Fall Harvest Days

To me, like most people, fall is the most beautiful season of the year, filled with colorful trees and an abundance of pumpkins. Therefore, there is a variety of places in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) offering fall harvest celebrations. Dave and I chose to visit Mt. Vernon in Virginia, home to the nation’s first president, George Washington.

We enjoyed our visit to the Mt. Vernon estate on the 4th of July last year, but seeing this historical site during the fall months seemed like an ideal time. In fact, the Fall Harvest Family Days, which takes place on October 25 and 26, 2014 were a great opportunity. As soon as we went through the visitor center, we saw a wagon full of happy kids with their parents.

SANS Training

crystal-city-2014I recently attended SANS training at Hilton Double Tree Hotel in Crystal City. It was my third training with the SANS Institute and in my experience training with this company is the best option available.  It was a week long training for me and it was worth it. SANS offers endless training opportunities and there is a case to be made for all IT employees to take some of their training.

SANS offers the associated GIAC exam within the next 4 months. However, it’s really all about the journey, not the destination!

Grillin’ & Chillin’ on Labor Day

Tradition dictates that food cooked on an open flame is synonymous with summer holidays. Labor Day is the last holiday of the summer and is the second largest cookout event of the year in the United States.

A Day at Great Falls

Dave and I decided to take advantage of the Pre-Labor Day weekend and visit Great Falls Park located on the southern bank of the Potomac in Virginia, 14 miles (23 km) upstream from Washington, DC. Chesapeake and Ohio Canal parkland is located along the northern banks of the river in Maryland. The Potomac and the falls themselves are within Maryland. Scenic views are offered on both the Maryland side and the Virginia side. We visited overlook points on the Virginia side.

Discovered a new favorite restaurant

Japanese Hibachi restaurants are one of our favorite choices for dining out. Usually, we visit the one located close to our home, which never disappoints us. Tonight we felt adventurous and decided to try a different Japanese restaurant in the Alexandria area – Sumo Sushi Hibachi. It’s located in a plaza with plenty of parking, which is rare for this city (!).
