4th of July Firewarks in DC

This year’s 4th of July we celebrated at the National Mall. When we started living in the DC metro area, the first 3 years we enjoyed the Independence Day fireworks in Washington, DC. Then, we explored various options and places to celebrate the 4th of July and view other fireworks. We’ve been to the party at the mansion in Maryland, on the USS Constellation historic ship in Baltimore and numerous times on the beach among others. Here are a couple posts of our Independence Day celebration at Mount Vernon and at Virginia Beach, but there is nothing more impressive than the fireworks at the National Mall.

DC was packed as expected. We get out from L’Enfant Plaza metro station around 8 P.M. and headed towards the National Mall. On our way, we saw this artwork with a rock smashing a car next to Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Interesting, we saw pretty much the same artwork in Sydney. The link to my post is here.

We passed the butterfly garden with the iron fountain named the GUR-KARMA-RANA Keith Fountain next to the Smithsonian Castle museum.

Approaching the Mall. It is crowded at the carousel.

The National Mall is packed too.

Looking for the best available place to view the fireworks. It looks pretty to see the firework with the Washington Memorial in the foregroud, but I thought it was a little far away.

We decided to pass the Washington Memorial and find a spot closer to the Lincoln Memorial, from where the fireworks were supposed to be launched.

Getting darker. The firework show will start soon.

Right across from the Washington Memorial some performance was going on. Actually, we could hear the music from every corner of the Mall.

And here is Lincoln Memorial. We found a decent spot. It would be nice to watch the fireworks from the Lincoln Memorial steps, but people come very early to secure a spot there. Maybe next year… 🙂

World War II Memorial was already lit up.

The new National Museum of African American History and Culture opened on the Mall in September, 2016.

And about 9:15 P.M. the beautiful show began.

At the end, the fireworks were almost above our heads. We were lying down on the grass for a better view. Happy Birthday, America!
